Caritas is hope in action
For over 55 years, Caritas has been walking alongside the world’s most vulnerable, working with communities to help them achieve their development goals and build a better future for all. By listening to locals and working together, lasting change is created.
Caritas has been committed to tackling poverty and inequality in Australia and overseas since 1964.
When a crisis hits, Caritas works hand-in-hand with local communities and churches to bring aid and relief to people whose lives have been devastated by natural disaster or conflict.
Today, Caritas serves in 18 countries, working with over 50 local partners in communities to bring hope, support and compassion to the world’s most vulnerable people.
As part of our mandate, Caritas also seeks to engage all Australians, especially the Catholic community, to advocate and act for equality and justice for all.
The way Caritas works
By partnering with local communities, Caritas supports them to build better lives for themselves – improving access to sustainable livelihoods, clean water, sanitation and education.
Caritas has learnt from its work over the years that for those living in poverty, locally-led development programs can create lasting change in communities. That’s why Caritas works with communities at the grassroots to eliminate poverty, by focusing on local strengths to promote positive change.
What drives Caritas
Caritas is committed to work alongside the most vulnerable, and to address the imbalance of power by including the people affected in the decisions impacting their lives.
Caritas is inspired by the Gospel, which finds its expression in Catholic social traditions.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” Luke 4:17-19
Justice, dignity and hope for humanity and all of God’s creation.
In the spirit of the Gospel, Caritas works in partnership with communities in Australia and overseas to achieve their development goals and to thrive.
Caritas Australia is part of the international Caritas network.
